Congratulations on deciding to become a neurosurgeon and for beginning your MD program! As a medical student, I believe internships are built into the summer months of your program. When selecting locations for these internships, make sure to research strong neuroscience/neurology programs at various hospitals. If your program allows for more unstructured time during the summer and you are free to select your own internship, then you have options: 1) volunteer in a neuroscience research lab at a university (email professors with websites highlighting research that interests you), 2) apply for internships at pharmaceutical, biotech, or start-up companies that perform neuroscience research, 3) shadow a neurosurgeon or neurologist at a hospital. If you choose to work in a hospital (which would be a great way to build your expertise), then target your search on hospitals/programs that you would like to attend for residency. Building those relationships early will help set the stage for your continued training after med school. Good luck!
