Shrinad’s Answer

Hi Kyla,

When i was onto my first step towards professional career, i had the same issue because i loved music. Just to give a background i play Tabla (Indian Percussion) since i was 2.5 years old i used to learn that and play it. I had a dream to be a musician by profession but to be frank when after my graduation i had a choice to pursue career in engineering or being a musician. I asked my dad what should i do , he gave a very wise advise "Music is your hobby , what will you do when you want to rejuvenate from your daily life what will you have to get yourself relieved from stress". This advise from my dad really helped to explore few more options , i liked Computer Networking as well so i pursued my CCNA studies after my bachelors in Engineering in Information Technology. Today its been 6 years i am into IT Industry and hold several certifications in network security. I feel very comfortable working in Network Security domain, i never feel bored doing it, but along with that when i feel stressed or tired i play music that helps me feel relieved and fresh.

It is very important for your understand the importance between your hobby or extra curricular domain and professional domain. Today when i see back it feels i got a right advise as i feel if the earning is better it helps me learn music , buy new instruments and other things.

Hope this is helpful to get answers to question you had in your mind.

Regards,
Shrinad

The positive thing here is that you hold many talents. You don't have to know exactly what you want, and even if you make mistakes, you can still be successful. Have fun and do what makes you happy. Sometimes you have to experience different things to realize exactly what you want to do and so audition for plays, take voice lessons, etc... You will figure it out through your experience.
Thank you comment icon Thank You very much for your answer. But how do I tell my parents I want to be an actor, because I went to a private university and they spent a lot Afolabi
Thank you comment icon Sit them down. Advise them that you have gotten a chance to experience a great opportunity and have decided to pursue other dreams. Make sure you tell them why you want to be an actor, how it makes you feel, and what you plan on achieving from acting. Don't ever be afraid to have those meaningful, life conversations with your parents. They may turn out to be your biggest supporters. Joanndra McCrea
Thank you comment icon Thank you ma, but I will try to get a role in a movie before sitting them down to talk to them, do you think that is a good thing. They know I can act very well, I act in church drama. Afolabi

Kayla’s Answer

Hi,

I was in a similar boat (studied economics and computer science, but had a very diversified interest and skill in the arts). You are 100% able to pursue anything outside of tech with a w major/focus in Comp Sci.

However, if you find yourself enjoying the conversations and logic of computer science, there are a lot of career opportunities that can blend Compsci, acting, and coaching. In my experience, I find that you'll find a blend of those skill sets as a Business Analyst, tech consultant, technical writer, a workplace trainer, and more!

While it might not lead to the exact same joy as coaching or acting, those types of roles do carry a similar interest! The job market is full of opportunities to blend different interests. The trick is finding them!

Dexter’s Answer

Hi Afolabi,

Have you thought about pursuing Computer Programming, since you have a degree in it already, and when you find a job, have a goal of becoming a manager?

I personally love taking care of people, and with that in mind, I did not make my desire to manage a secret when I started my career. I've been on the management track for the past 9 years, and I can tell you that I'm very happy being a manager. It brings me joy to help my people achieve their career goals and it's the people interaction the fulfills me in my job.

For you, I feel that coaching and managing is similar (if not the same), so perhaps thats something you can strive for? And if you love coaching, you must also love learning about coaching. If this is true, you can fulfill yourself by learning from good and bad managers on your career journey until you can be the best manager you can be.

My answer isn't complete because it does not address acting, but I must tell you, in being the best manager you can be, even the most honest manager has to hide things from their people. That does require acting :)

I wish you the best of luck in your career!

Ashley’s Answer

Hi Afolabi!

Many people, including myself, have struggled with this dilemma. A few years ago, I read an article that changed my life. The advice the article gave was this: find a career that allows you to live the lifestyle you desire. For example, if you want to be off on weekends, work from home, and make a generous salary, you should pursue a career that gives you that. I agree with the advice above in that you should not monetize your passion or hobbies because you may lose the joy that comes with them. Instead, focus on finding a career that you like, and one that gives you the room to enjoy your hobbies even more.

I hope this helps. Good luck to you!

Pooja’s Answer

Hey Afolabi,
Let me tell you my story. I had no idea what I wanted to do after I completed my schooling. I joined engineering without thinking much but I didn't like coding. I was scared my whole first year that I was in the wrong place pursuing the wrong degree. I love singing and I do have a fairly good voice, but had never pursued it properly, and didn't have a chance to measure how good I am at it.
4 years of my Undergrad went by and I studied, worked, programmed, but didn't like it. Got a job in a very reputed company in Cyber Security.
That was when I realized, it doesn't start and end at coding/programming. I liked Cyber Security.
So I left the job and pursued a Master's in Cyber Security.
When I got hired by Cisco, I started doing a lot of other activities aside from my work. I started casually singing and jamming with people, and yes, I've still got a lot to learn, but I enjoy every moment of it. It's a good change of pace after a long day at work. Work that I also enjoy.

So, what I am trying to say is, that sometimes, you find what you like or are good at a little later than you expect.
My honest advice to you would be to complete your degree, and keep pursuing your interests on the side. Keep your options open.
And most importantly, believe that your parents will support you at the end of the day. Despite what they have invested in your education, they wouldn't want to see their kid stuck in a career he doesn't fit in. On your end, just make sure you're giving it your best shot.

Good luck!

Hi. As you are interested in Coaching and acting, you can pursue these along with a full time job as an IT. There is a dearth for talented teachers and coaches. This extra activity can be taken after work hours or during the weekends to build a extra income and the pleasure it gives you will be immense. You can be relieved of stress and at the same time be happy that you get to pursue what your interests are along with the IT career.
Good luck!

1. Always have a backup plan.
2. Get an education.
3. If what you love is then not the activity which gives you money, then do that activity as a hobby. If it becomes your career good, if it does not, you are still doing it.
As they say - One for the kitchen, one for the soul and one for the mind.

Loyd’s Answer

I am an engineering manager but also and active musician and recording artist (on-line under Ragon Linde). This morning I just heard something that stuck with me, money is an outcome, not a purpose. Ask yourself what in your life gives you purpose? Your job is not your life, it is just something you do. Maybe being a software engineer is just a task you perform that makes your purpose, coaching and/or acting, possible.

As a gynecologist, I’ve been able to combine my passion for helping people, with a desire to work with my hands, and an interest in science. I feel lucky that I’m able to do something that put my skills to good use. I consider myself an exception to the rule. Most people are lucky if they can find a job that can support them and their family. Computer science, and especially higher-level programming skills are very in demand. I have no doubt that you’ll be able to find a job with those skills. I will think about it like this, see programming as your job that allows you to support your passion for coaching and acting. You should offer to coach at your local high school or join your local acting group. Best of luck.

Arlene’s Answer

Being a Computer Science major does not mean you have to do a "programming" job in the future. However, I will advice you not to dismiss "programming" entirely. Do some self-assessments first. What made you take up Computer Science? Is there any module(s) in Computer Science that you are interested in? Database? Software Design? Network Architecture? Testing and QA? Process and Methods? Artwork designing? Media? Or maybe find out what you "hate" about programming? Programming can also be learned using the right tools! Today, there are many programming tools that can help you easily build a software or a website. Find out what your interests are and if you do, you will surely make money out of it :)

Coaching and acting are good "traits". There are many coach and actors in the IT industry too! I love IT trainers who can teach a subject very well! Acting is a form of self expression and if you use it well, it can help you in your career.

However, as you have said it is not easy to make it in coaching and acting alone. I say continue to pursue your passion and who knows maybe in the future you'll be able to combine these two! :)

Since you love Coaching and Acting, you have lot of opportunities in modern day. While doing coding, you can start a Vlog to coach people "how to do coding". Your acting skills may handy when it comes to user training (once the application launch to it's users) even you can start a Youtube channel.

While doing your professional job (coding), you can join a part time coaching activity or any acting role to enjoy your life. You might be able to cross the roads, if your part time activities went well beyond the expectation.

Teresa’s Answer

I think it's very important to have balance. If you really love doing something, you should make that part of your life. It doesn't necessarily have to be your full time job (at least not at first). The daily bills must be paid first but that doesn't mean you cannot enjoy your passion at the same time. When you say you want to make money doing what you love, you will have to decide exactly what that feels like to you. Meaning, how much money do you NEED to be happy and satisfied. Having a job that is OK, might work just fine so long as you are able to also fit in your hobby/passion/love of the arts.

Kayenaat’s Answer

The question is quite subjective and totally depends upon who you are and what your interest is. Let me give you my example. I love traveling and when I was in college and in that phase of my life where I needed to choose a path, I was really keen to do make a career out of traveling. So, I took a project and went on a trip to have an idea of how my life would be as a travel blogger and photographer. And, to my surprise, I hated it! I was not able to enjoy the one thing I loved because all in my mind was that I need to write this before the thought slips away, I need to click this, I need to complete the itinerary and so on. That trip taught me that traveling is something I love but not as a career. I can't put all the pressure on one thing that I love.

I am nowhere implying that it's not necessary to do what you love. The idea is whatever you choose as a career, don't rush into it. Have an overall assessment- talk to people who are in that field, try it out as a career, don't be focused upon one thing, try to explore every option and then make informed decisions. If you do this, you'd surely excel and make money in whatever field you choose.

I believe you have already took the first step, people are stuck with the job they don't like or repeating what they do all the time. So the main thing is your passion and dedication of what you want to do and the money flow coming to you from your job. You definitely have a positive talent and yes everything now and days are hard regardless, but it is about your passion and dedication that form you and how the money and career make you happy or love is about what and how you are making it happen and lead to it. You can semi-part time for doing coaching and acting or you can use your computer skill you have and form a CS thing to fulfill what you want to do.
