Would you recommend a career in Urology?

I’m considering going into medicine, but I don’t know what specialty is right for me. I would like a career where I can tackle important problems and make people’s lives better. What do you guys think? Would this be the right specialty? I’m trying to figure out which one is right for me.

Rachel’s Answer

Urology is a fantastic field. It is a surgical sub-specialty that combines clinic with the operating room. The salary can be generous. The schedule can be relatively predictable depending on how much hospital call you take. The disease processes that you treat (prostate and bladder cancer, penile fractures, kidney stones, etc) are all highly interesting.

Urology is a desirable surgical subspecialty. You can really improve the quality of life for your patients in urology. It generally also tends to have a pretty good lifestyle.

Agree with comments provided. Some things in life can’t be answered until there is some discovery later down the road, and that’s okay. For example, your passion to go into med school might be based on some experiences and insight. Yet, you may find while in med school you may further appreciate which fork in the road aligns with your passions and talents, whether it’s peds, internal medicine, surgery, etc. Then after matching in a post-med school residency training based on those pursuits, it’s totally normal to further refine your career direction. For example, after you go into surgery, you may then decide to specialize in Cardio-thoracic, or orthopedics, or urology, etc. Or once you are in an Internal Medicine residency, you may decide you like cardiology, or endocrinology, etc.

A lot of these decisions will be based on experiences, mentorship and learned preferences. Self-discovery is a wonderful, life-long voyage.

Michael’s Answer

There are many specialties in medicine. At this moment, I would recommend focus on getting in and through medical school first. Once you are in your clerkship, you will find out which specialty suits you most.
