Is it difficult to find a full-time job with a major in sports mangement?

I plan on majoring in sports management. I would like to know how difficult it is to find a job as a coach, event coordinator, sports team manager. I also would like to know what careers I can pursue with a degree in Sports Management. #business #management #sports #degree #athletics

Short answer. Yes. Long answer. But not impossible. You may want to explore the pre-law route to understand the contractual side of sports. Having a firm grasp on that will only help in these pursuits.

Sports Management is relatively a new major compared to many of the others. However, the jobs are available. From Professional Sports, to Event Management, and more.

Here's a few things you need to think through:
1. What is it you want to do professionally? Work in Professional Sports? Event Management? Team Manager?
2. Start networking now, and often
3. If you want to coach, then take a coaching minor (not sure it's a major yet) along with your Sports Management degree
4. Whatever sport you want to coach, then I suggest you talk with the coach at your college to see how you can join the team in some capacity and start learning the ins/outs. Make sure you communicate your desire to be a coach after graduation so he knows what you're looking to do.

I graduated with a Sports Management degree and have had 3 jobs in sports. I have worked at a local ice rink as the Morning Manager (getting to work at 4am), I have worked in the ticket office of an NFL team, and I have been the Stadium Operations Manager for a minor league baseball team (and worked Spring Training for a MLB team). The jobs are there, you have to network and you have to know what path you want to pursue.

I wish you well in your endeavors.

I agree with Keith’s answer, but it is not impossible. Network yourself as much as possible, get your name out there with as many sports programs as you can. When I was in Sports Management is what all about who you knew. There were people getting jobs a lot faster than me, doing worse in the classes I took with them, just because of who they knew. The experience is critical in this. Once you get your name out, get yourself an internship to better establish your name. Once you have this you can further your networking and work your way up. Good luck with everything and hopefully this helps!
