Cristina’s Answer

This is really a great question and one I have been reflecting on a lot during these unprecedented times. Carson and Darin both answered with solid information. I think Virtual volunteering is one you should highly look into in your community or throughout the internet. You can focus on virtual volunteering and down the line in our changing environments -- so figure out what you want to do and how you want to do it. You can consider writing cards to hospital/sick people, helping with food pantries, helping with career advice, virtual tutoring services, spreading awareness about a topic you care about, putting together donations for your community (clothes, books, supplies, etc). Volunteering is what you make of it!

Carson’s Answer

This is such a great and important question! The first thing you need to figure out is what are you passionate about? Volunteering is incredibly fulfilling, but making sure you are at a place that you love and truly believe in the mission is key. So I would research the non-profits in your community that you would love to represent. Go to their website and see what they are doing activity wise in the community. During Covid-19 I recommend reaching out to them and seeing what you can do virtually to help support them or volunteer. Most organizations are fundraising, so maybe helping promote their fundraising through your friends and family via social media, or maybe offering them advice and ideas on fresh, new ways to reach the community is always a plus. Being an active volunteer myself, the best way to volunteer is by being active and present at everything you can. If they post on social media, like, share, comment on it, and encourage everyone to do the same. Give that organization as much of a spotlight as you can.

Summer’s Answer

There is a lot of ways to become a volunteer in your community. I would recommend finding a cause/issue in your local community you're passionate about and then looking for a nonprofit organization that helps support that cause that offers volunteer activities. For example if you're passionate about ensuring families have food/meals you want to look at opportunities with your local food bank or meals on wheels to get started volunteering. Also your local city chamber of commerce which often in their newsletter they often list volunteer opportunities coming up.

Melisa’s Answer

Hello Aadhar.

Thank you for thoughtful question. It’s great that you are thinking about this, as volunteer opportunities can often lead you to new connections and insight into new experiences and potential careers.

As Carson shared in his answer, it may help to narrow down what you are passionate about and find opportunities with a mission you believe in. Finding something you can get behind makes the volunteer experience meaningful and enjoyable.

And to add to Cristina’s and Darin’s answers, I totally agree. With current limits on traditional, in person volunteering, there are also a lot of great virtual volunteer opportunities you can sign-up for and still gain experience in. Some are virtual, but others are remote or "do it yourself" volunteer projects.

See suggested next steps below for some helpful resources.

Best wishes to you in your career and educational goals.

Melisa recommends the following next steps:

Consider finding a mentor or individual in a career that interests you and learn more about their job, what they like and how they volunteer in their community.

Darin’s Answer

Right now with COVID-19 going on the best place to look if you wanted to volunteer is food banks. Food banks need a lot of help sorting and distributing. Virtual volunteering has also become a big thing during this time. Everything from making masks for first responders, nurses and doctors, quilting blankets for patients in hospitals and the elderly, to proof reading ebooks for errors. Check out volunteermatch.org thats the site I use when I'm wanting to volunteer in my local area

Simeon’s Answer

I would talk to your academic advisors about volunteer and internship opportunities and see if there are any extracurricular clubs that grab your attention. You'll want to build up a professional network by making friends, mostly with people in a similar situation as yourself, and see if anyone is able to connect you with an opportunity.

John’s Answer

I would recommend doing a google search for volunteer opportunities in a specific field and within your area or you can volunteer virtually. Since 2013, virtual volunteering has increased as it provides the opportunity to volunteer at convenient times and while doing something you enjoy.

I am current transcribing women's suffragists documents for an organization out of Colorado, and transcribing aero space and aviation documents for the Smithsonian. Its like a history lesson and a public service in a single go.

Tammy’s Answer

What I am finding during this time is that everyone is being creative while trying to conduct business if they can. Volunteerism is one of them. If you find there is a particular organization that you are interested in, look at their website. I am finding many non-profits offering virtual volunteering. Here is one organization that you can match what you are interested in and they can let you know what opportunities exist in your area. It is called Volunteer Match. Check it out! Good luck. Please stay safe, active and healthy (mentally and physically).

Tammy recommends the following next steps:

Look into non-profit organization websites that interest you
Go to Volunteer Match website
