Looking back on college, what is the number one thing you wish you did differently and why?

I am asking this question because I want my college experience the best it can be. By hearing people answer this, I will have some foresight of college and knowledge of what to maybe avoid in college. Thanks! #college #help #college-advice #member-experience #rights #be-your-best-self

I wish I would have taken better advantage of office hours held by professors and teachers. This is a great opportunity to get to know the professors and ask questions outside of class. I knew a number of people who were offered opportunities to assist professors in their research and meet others in their field of study. Once your professor knows you are dedicated and resourceful, you will be top of mind when those opportunities surface.

Hi!
First, I will say that I really wasn't prepared for college, as I had no clue about what I wanted to major in. While your first year is getting the basics out of the way, give some thought as to where your passion lies, and what interests you most. Maybe get a summer job in a related area and see how you like it. Remember this is what your career will be in for many years.

Second, I would join several organizations in order to meet people and expand your interests. Forming relationships is a very important part of college life and helps make you feel a part of the whole.

Last, I would say use your time wisely. You will have no one there to tell you to study, and if you are not self-motivated this can be hard as you want to go do things with your friends. There is always something going on, so you have to be disciplined about studying everyday.

Good luck, this is a wonderful and challenging time in your life!

Hello, really good question. If i could go back I would have sought out summer internships that related to my desired career and college major. This would have given me more experience and a deeper understanding of what my career would be like. It also would have helped differentiate me from other candidates.

Good luck!

Michele’s Answer

I wish I had had more fun in college. I went in 1982 and went to a local college first, didn't get involved in any student activities big mistake. I think it was the reason I bounced from college to college. Biggest regret not going on a massive 2.5-month trip to Europe for $peanuts! Being as active in school as you can help you to be active at work. I needed to stretch from what I was taught by my parents a bit. That trip was for 'rich people" to them.
Finally, work in college but don't do what I did. I worked full time. I was a bartender with great $, Flexible hours, but also back-breaking work you often too tired to get to class. I paid for my school cash. No debt was drilled into my head and it was awesome but I had no fun at all.

Elizabeth’s Answer

Hi! So I am going to be a senior in college this year, but I can answer this question based on what I wish I did differently in my first three years and what I hope to improve on this upcoming year.

Something that I wish I did differently was manage my stress better. I often put too much pressure on myself for big tests and assignments to the point where it was leading to unnecessary worrying rather than productivity. Some stress/pressure is good because it can make you perform better, but it is all about finding a balance and not letting yourself get too overwhelmed.

One thing that may help with this is to try to take your focus off of the test/assignment itself and instead focus on actually comprehending the information and thinking of ways it may be useful to you later in life. This will make learning more enjoyable and useful in the long run!
