Would it be better for me to graduate with a bachelor's degree and then get a job for a few years then go back and get my PhD? Or should I go ahead and get all my schooling done at once?

I have had a lot of different advice but never from a professional. I would like a clear view on what would be better for my future as a person who is looking to not be in debt for 20 years but wants a good job. #career #professor #principal

I will tell you about my experience. I got my bachelors, worked for 2 years, then got my masters. The two years I spent working were mostly for saving. I have to say here that I am not interested in teaching nor a PhD.

Your case is different because you are interested in a PhD. If teaching is what you are looking for then I would recommend you to do it all at once. Moreover, you mostly get paid to be PhD student while doing research. It is also the case when it comes to masters, but a bit less likely. Look for a professor that you find his research interesting, discuss your plans with him, and tell him how you could be add to his research.

Check with your university adviser and I believe you would be surprised.

DOTUN’s Answer

I would advise that you work for a few years before you seek additional qualifications.
By doing so it gives you the opportunity to have a good understanding of how life is away from school.
