Doc’s Answer

Hi Maria,

Psychologist schooling requirements consist of around six years of study - which includes a bachelor's and a master's degree; however a doctorate degree and internships and/or professional experience is often needed to secure licensure for clinical positions, which brings the total time up to 10-12 years.

Bachelor’s Degree (4 years)
Aspiring psychologists typically need to begin their education with a bachelor's degree in psychology. These programs are usually 4 years in length and may be available as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree.

Master’s Degree (2 years)
At the master's level, students can most commonly pursue a Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MS) degree in psychology or a specific area of psychology.

Doctoral Degree (6 years)
Aspiring psychologists typically need to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Psychology or a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree. These degree programs may take anywhere from 4 to 6 years to complete and some may accept students with only a bachelor's degree. Most of these programs include a practicum experience and/or other hands-on learning experiences and training.

Good Luck Mariea

Riley’s Answer

To be a psychologist, you will need to earn a bachelor's degree (4 years) and a master's degree (2 years) in psychology, which brings you to at least 6 years of college. However, in order to be a working psychologist you will most likely need to earn a doctoral degree, then work in internships for a few years. Overall, you will probably need to spend about 10-12 years in school to pursue this career.

David’s Answer

Becoming a psychologist requires obtaining a master's or doctoral degree. During this process, students might perform research, work supervised clinical rotations, and teach classes. Psychologists can choose from a variety of specialties, such as school, clinical, or counseling psychology. To start a psychology career, you'll need to get at least a master's degree (for school psychology) or a doctorate to practice in other specialties. To get licensed to practice psychology, you'll need to earn the required degree, pass a state and/or national exam, and fulfill other licensing requirements.

Tina’s Answer

Hi Mariea-
While you can study psychology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, it does require a doctorate to be considered a psychologist. The path will greatly depend on whether you would like to be a research psychologist or a clinical psychologist. Deciding this will help with the steps leading up to the doctoral program. A research psychologist may work in a lab or as a professor, while a clinical psychologist will often have a practice where they see patients or work in a community or hospital setting. I am currently a doctoral student in clinical psychology and am happy to answer any further questions you may have.
Good luck!

Go to www.bls.gov for more information. Depending on the area of Psychology you want to go into, there will be a lot of mental health and humanities classes you will need to take.

In the meantime, look at events or volunteer opportunities to help in your community dealing with supporting people going through a crisis or needing help with their life. The best thing to do in preparation in Psychology is engaging with your community, especially dealing with mental health.
