I would not say that pure Computer Science would be required with every job. By this I mean software development, design, testing, etc. But I do strongly feel that some office automation skills (SharePoint, Microsoft Office Suite, Excel macros, and Excel functions) are and will always be necessary in corporate America. When I look at resumes for roles such as Business Analysts, I always look for technical skills. They are a plus and will make one business analyst stand out over another.

It is not expected that you learn computer science, however in any career and in tomorrow's business it will give you an edge to have strong computer skills, in my case it allowed me jump from entry positions to management positions. IT is becoming a more and more relevant aspect of each company, today IoT, cloud computing and AI are growing everywhere and the combination of business skills and IT will make you a very valuable resource in many companies. You can major in business and use tons of online resources like codecademy, coursera, edx MITx and others to get computer science skills without spending money, but it will require a big time commitment. If you dont want to go that deep in CS the minimum expectation today is that you manage basic concepts and tools like MS office, SharePoint, etc.

My best advice: take as many quant (quantitative) focused classes as possible ... mathematics, statistics, finance, accounting, etc. I see more value in taking data analysis / analytics classes than pure computer science, but leaning one programming language would be valuable more for wiring your brain to think and reason in that way that anything else.

Computer science knowledge will definitely be vital in any career that you choose to pursue. Every position I have ever worked in required some sort of computer knowledge. Being familiar with just basic programs such as the Microsoft office suite (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc.) at a young age gives you an advantage.

If we look back into history, businesses that were not having a vision on technology lost their game to relatively technologically advanced companies. As it happened, all the positions that were more manual are quickly getting replaced with positions that are more technical and efficient. In that sense, to be in a future job, there needs to be a reasonable amount of technical understanding to fit into the future roles.


While using basic skills to communicate (email, Word processing), present ideas (PowerPoint), analyze information (Excel, Access) are assumed for almost all the upcoming jobs, an understanding of some level of logical expression through some programming language would help not only to make your work more efficient, but also could get your business ahead. Even if we don't get to develop software, the training itself could help apply logical thinking to worldly problems beyond computers, to find elegant and creative solutions..
