Yandira’s Answer

Hi Alexis

This is a diffiuclt question to answer because there are some jobs that do require work experience and others do ask for entry level. Look out for the difference since the entry level may say "case worker" and not social worker. This is where you can use any interships or volunteer expereince to set your resume apart from others.

Debbie Yoro’s Answer

After getting your social work degree (BSW or MSW) feel free to apply for jobs where you meet the minimum qualifications stated in the posting. Most if not all MSW degrees require you to do a practicum (like an internship) so that you'll have real world experience before you graduate. Some social work position require you to be licensed though so look for that in the post. After I graduated (BSW) I found a job as a case manager. While in college I worked in social service settings: group homes for those w/developmental disabilities, child and family services, home for sexually abused teens and mothers with drug addiction. I wasn't a social worker in these positions but gained experience while in college.

Debbie Yoro recommends the following next steps:

Look for social work jobs you might be interested in and review the postings to see if there is a commonality in what kind of experience they are looking for.
Consider getting a MSW degree for better earning potential and job mobility. With a MSW you'll end up w/more experience when you graduate.
Look for social service type jobs that are entry level to start getting experience in the field. You'll learn good communication skills, people skills, empathy., and personal/emotional boundaries. Start adding to your resume and LinkedIn page so that companies can find you.
