I want advice in a M.A degree in psychology

Currently I posses a bachelors degree in psychology from a foreign country (Colombia), which I already accredited here and got all my credits transferred, now I’d like to find a M.A degree that is not super pricey but at the same time that provides me with high quality education. I’m looking for recommendations or steps to take next, I’m a good student and I earned one of the most renowned awards from my country in psychology; is this something that could make me elegible for a scholarship or something like that?, thank you so much for your time.

Best, Henry Avila. #psychology

Hi Henry!

When looking at colleges for M.A., there a a few accredited universities on the East Coast of U.S. that offer good pricing and that are accredited. A few of those are Appalachian State, North Carolina State University, North Carolina Central University, and University of North Carolina at Charlotte. These all range in prices and having scholarships that are offered to lower the cost. Depending on what field of psychology you want to study, some colleges have better programs than others. If you are interested in counseling UNCC and North Carolina State have greats departments in the field. North Carolina State has a great cognitive psychology degree program.

Though getting larger grants are difficult, apply forssmaller ones and they will add up. Also, get in contact with advisors or people in the field and talk/email with them. That will help you develop relationships with the staff and could help you obtain funding.

Hi Henry - Congratulations on the hard work of first - being successful in your chosen major and second - getting the credit transferred! During this time of change, a lot of universities are changing their programs to be online. In general, Higher Ed classes shifted to online are cheaper than on-campus, but still may require some fees. If location is not a consideration (meaning, you do not need to attend physically in order to have visa status as a student) then I suggest you consider reviewing the top M.A. programs in your field and conducting a cost comparison for the online programs. Research and knowledge is power when it comes to strategic decisions regarding loans, continued education and career steps!

Rita’s Answer

There are some graduate schools that will pay you to attend, but obviously the fit needs to be right on both sides. Below are some things you can do to help find that perfect match.

Rita recommends the following next steps:

Research on-line graduate programs that you can apply to with full or partial scholarships (i.e. Georgetown University - School of Continuing Studies)
If you are employed, ask your employer if they will pay a % of your graduate tuition?
If employed, try to negoiate a contract to have your employer pay for you graduate degree in return for agreeing to stay at your current job for at least 2 years
There are many grants out there that are never applied for. You just need to put the time in to find them on-line and apply (even a few smaller grants $2k can add up).
Depending on your financial situation, you can always take out a higher education loan (SoFi) you would pay back after you graduate and get that higher paying job with our Masters Degree.

John’s Answer

Look for schools with strong research programs in the specific field of Psychology that you want to study. Many of those schools will offer 'assistantships' or 'Fellowships' where you work with a professor on their research in exchange for free tuition.
With your credentials, you might be in a good position to land one of these positions.
