In the exotic veterinarian feild, what would be the biggest advantages and disadvantages?

I have a friend that left his suburban vet practice to work on research with exotic animals. Pay was drastically reduced as the funding for this work typically comes from grants and not as lucrative as a domestic pet practice. Also - he and family had to move around a lot more as one study ended or he was asked to participate in another one.


Personally he's very happy and his family was able to make the adjustment but there was definitely a tradeoff.
