Once I become a certified Veterinarian, what advice is there when deciding upon a specialty?

I'm headed to college and have been thinking about specializing in Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation for animals or as a general practitioner. What is there to think about when making this important decision? #veterinarian #veterinary #science #college #career #career-counseling

Danika’s Answer

When you get to vet school, there are many opportunities to join student clubs within the school or national chapters of student groups with parent organizations and I would highly consider joining any that you are even remotely interested in to see what you like and what you like a little less. You certainly do not have to decide that you want a specialty certification right after graduating vet school either. Many wait until after they have been practicing for several years before they decide to go back for a residency. Your clinical rotations can also help you decide what you may want to specialize in too.

Danika recommends the following next steps:

Join student clubs
Attend extracurricular wet labs.
See what topics you like in your curriculum
Use clinical rotations to see if you really enjoy those areas.
