What kinds of internships, volunteer work, or part-time jobs should I search for if am considering a career in the Veterinary field?
I am a Junior in high school considering a career in Veterinary medicine; I want to get a job for the summer to help pay for college costs. Should I be aware of any specific job-internship combination or would a job/part-time job -- lets say as a kennel assistant -- be best to work my way up to a higher position? #career #career-counseling #internships #veterinarian #veterinary #veterinary-medicine #internship #career-advice

Yes, it's a good idea, if you want to pursue a career as a veterinarian, to work in the field. Ask for work with local vets, and with animal shelters. Or, if you live in a farming community, try to find work as a large-animal vet assistant.
Ask for work assisting with the full range of work vets do, including surgery, treatments, routine stuff, and euthanasia of sick animals.
Pay attention to what's going on, ask questions, and read everything you can get your hands on.
And, pay attention to your studies. Veterinary schools are VERY selective, and, sad to say, you need a Plan B. I have a college friend who couldn't get into vet school so she had to settle for medical school. She's a wonderful doctor now.

Try to get positions at Veterinary hospitals, shelters, doggie day cares facilities or any where that involves the care of animals.

Thank you for your question! Sounds like you have done your research. Yes, a great way to gain some experience in Veterinary Medicine would be to find a position at any of the local veterinary hospitals or clinics around your area. I would also suggest looking into any local shelters as you would really see some serious health issues with some of the animals there. Petting zoos and Large National Zoos are also great options where you can get a part-time job or an internship. I believe at this point, it important to show that you are being proactive in volunteering or having some kind of experience that you can showcase when you apply for college. The sooner you begin volunteering, the more experience you can show on your resume and your college application. I hope this help you. Good Luck!
