Would you have to adapt often if your career is in technology?

Will you have to "change" in order to avoid structural unemployment? Technology advances at an exponential rate, so one would have to constantly learn new things. Some technologies become obsolete and companies go out of business, so what would that leave for someone working in tech?

Lionel’s Answer

What a great, insightful question Bryanna. I would say you constantly are learning. And learning changes you by itself. Yes, there are key points you need to let go of a technology you have used in the past for a newer one, but it's not a 1-1, but an evolution. So, for example, when "the cloud" and SaaS came along, many of the technologies that I am expert in are still relevant. How I adapt them in the cloud is now key. And there are new technologies in the cloud to supplement.

Hope that's helpful,
Lionel

Lennox’s Answer

Technology exist to support people & society. As the need for people and organizations evolve, technology changes. However, solid foundations in math, science, culture and politics and how these change over time and culture is critical. Remember, this is about life long learning and surrounding yourself with life long learners.

Meg’s Answer

I agree with Lionel. It is an environment of constant learning. You do need to adapt, but it's evolutionary adaption as Lionel suggests. The fundamental lessons are likely the most important. For instance, if you are a coder: what makes good code, what are the ethics involved in the work, how do you deliver projects to specifications, what questions would you ask to better understand the user - these lessons are irrespective of the language you code in and are fundamental in software development. So it is important to make sure you not only understand the tasks for completing things but the WHY they are important - it makes adaptation easier.

Gary’s Answer

Hi,
Yes, definitely...that is a great question and insight into the IT World. I have been with Dell for 15 years now in a few different roles and I can say that there are very few dull moments without new things to learn...products, systems, programs, processes, etc. It can be a lot at first but after a while you learn to adapt to a constantly changing environment and even crave the chaos and change ... good luck! :)

Pui Han’s Answer

Within all careers change is constant and even more so in IT. Someone once compared years in the IT industry to dog years (1 year = 7 years) because of how rapidly things change. Just in 2020 we've seen the world change with COVID and how rapidly companies have had to change to keep up and IT has been central in enabling that change.

Always keep learning and stay flexible in your expectations and you will be able to weather changes as they come your way.

cedric’s Answer

As said, this is a great question, the answer is simple but also leads to a lot of interrogations. IT and Technology Sectors are exciting because of its ability to change fast . Most of the time, trends are not predictables which make it even much more interesting. Technology is all about standard evolution and distrubtive evolution. some are predicitible some are not. you can rely on the moore's law and expect to double your compute capability and find out that the next real time is going from on premise to cloud. you only need to listen, be aware, accept to have doubts and be prepare to change. Flexible and open are key qualities to embrasse changes. Inovation is always close to technology and if you think about inovation you will find out that most of the time it is unprecedented. Stay agile and make sure that you lean something every day of your life

Anytime you may feel left out because you are not familiar with a certain technology, offer to help someone who is an expert in exchange for some guidance. That way you are both getting something in return and you also are investing in your personal growth.
