If you follow a lot of different sports closely, you're already a third of the way there. It's also important to read closely the sports stories in newspapers like the Daily News, and watch ESPN and think about how those professionals are forming and telling the stories. Then, there's finishing school and getting a college degree. You don't have to get A's or get a 4.0 GPA in college to be a sports journalist, trust me. But you do have to get a bachelor's in communications to be considered for most jobs in the business. The degree is important. You'll learn a lot in college classes dealing with journalism. And, when it comes down to it, an employer is never going to ask what your grades were in high school, or how you did on SATs. As long as you get a bachelor's in the long run, whether you get a GED, go to a community college and then transfer, and you can do the job, you'll get hired somewhere. A lot of my friends, and myself, did much better in college than high school because it's such a different environment and you're able to mostly learn what you care about. When you get to college, internships are important. Good luck!
