I studied mostly in Brazil in highschool, and my grades were around 60-70%, would this seriously hurt my GPA?

I am asking this because I am afraid that my GPA would really hurt my chances of getting accepted to college. Moreover, I took my 10th grade in US and had a GPA of 3.15 in Montverde Academy, and in my 12th grade I attended the American School of my hometown with a GPA of 2.87 (3rd quarter), however it is improving as this low GPA occurred to some screwups with deadlines of important assignments. Also I had a SAT score of 1710. #college #college-admissions #admissions-counseling

Juliana’s Answer

Hello Andre, good question

I wen to high school and did part of college in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and I also had to take the TOEFL in order to apply for American colleges. I believe it depends on the schools you are applying for, public schools seemed to be more competitive when it comes to student/ space ratio and therefore they will take a closer look into your grades. Private schools are paid out of pocket and might pay a closer attention on diversity/skills. guess it all depends which school and program you are applying to.

If you already have an academic history in the USA im assuming they will definitely take in consideration your grades from here.

On a side note: a good way to "make up" for average grades or insufficient scores is to explain and write a statement letter along with your application to the Dean of your school department or recruiter, why you were not able to achieve the expected score and how eager you are to join the school.
