There are many opportunities for high school students to "try out" career options in the arts. You can volunteer or do an internship at any museum or performing arts organization. Go on line and search the performing arts or museums in your city - and then pick one or two in which you think you'd like to get involved. Go to their website and look up "volunteer opportunities" or "internships" or look up the email address of a staff member you can write to ask about after-school and weekend volunteer opportunities. The smaller the organization, the more types of experiences you will have - working with curators to learn how artists are selected for exhibitions, working with the artistic director of a theatre company to learn how plays are picked, etc. If you're interested in writing, you could volunteer at a small magazine or paper publisher. You can also learn about the professional world of dance or the arts by taking classes on weekends or evenings where professional artists/dancers/writers work - the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, the Dance Theatre of Harlem, etc. Look up New York Foundation for the Arts for their listing of classes, etc. "The Field" is another organization for performing artists in New York with all sorts of learning opportunities. Good luck!

A great question - there certainly are many programs for juniors in high school that allow students to explore the arts, both during the school year and during the summer.

Here are a couple good links:

A good resource for summer opportunities in New York: http://summeroncampus.com/

Here is a program based during the school year at the Whitney Museum (deadline already passed, but this is a good representation of the sorts of internships museums provide: http://www.whitney.org/Education/Teens/GetInvolved.

Another great opportunity for students interested in visual and performing arts: http://schools.nyc.gov/offices/teachlearn/arts/summerarts.html

As far as general career exploration, you might want to check out Futures and Options, a program that helps students learn about careers: http://www.futuresandoptions.org/fao/

Good luck!
