Hey Anson, this is a great question that I also had. I did some study and even completed the Anna Wintour Master Class (Anna is the editor in chief of Vogue magazine).
Some great pieces of advice I obtained during the course:
1. No matter your business focus for your art keeping your eyes and ears open to the world around you is critical to the creative process
2. Absorb information/ideas throughout your day and put your own unique strong point of view what it means to you and illustrated that visually
3. Speak with people who the creativity will touch with an open mind and try to see things through their eyes
4. Study the world and what is happening cultures in this point of time
Best of luck and success :)

Hi Anson,
When I get a new project I generally follow few steps that helps ignite creativity in some way:
- Do research: Read about your topic and get as much information possible to learn and note the unique points that you think the consumer would be interesting in knowing
- Brain storm with a group of people
- Sketch your ideas
- Do word games to generate ideas
- Write about your product or topics personality
- Thesaurus.com is also helpful with word play
- Keep collecting best pieces that you come across for inspiration
- Talk to your senior creatives
Design trends are evolving each year. Keep learning and be inspired.
