Is a graphic design degree with a concentration in marketing better than just a graphic design degree?
Hi! I am a freshman at a community college currently and am trying to decide on a major for when I transfer to a four-year college. The Graphic design degree with marketing has more marketing classes of course. I am curious if that would boost my job availability or not so much. I enjoy the art side of graphic design and love to write so I am wondering if the marketing concentration would be beneficial.

Deciding whether to add Marketing to your studies alongside Graphic Design depends on what you want to do in your career, what you like, and what you're good at. If you enjoy the creative side of Graphic Design and also like writing, looking into Marketing could be a good fit. It can help you use your skills in new ways and open up more job options. Try talking to people who work in Marketing, doing some research on jobs, and maybe trying out internships to see what it's like.
Remember, college is a time to try new things and figure out what you want to do. Don't be afraid to explore different options until you find what works best for you. Good luck with your decision, and I hope you find a program that excites you!

Design and marketing is definitely a good combination that will improve your job prospects and your earning potential. But it really depends what you would like to do and what you are good at. You can find marketing/internet marketing courses online, e.g. on YouTube, coursera or Alison. Have a look to see if you find it interesting and enjoy it. If you find it mind-bogglingly boring it's probably not a good choice.
Other options to diversify (if available) could be website development (the technical part that would complement the design part) or psychology (for UX/UI) or architecture (for interior design).
Or you could focus on design and possibly get some certificates in fields that you would like to work in.
Either way, internships would help you decide what you really enjoy. You can use LinkedIn or Indeed to find internships. Make a profile on LinkedIn, make contacts and start to network.
Also, there is no reason to stay in the same design field all your life.
I hope this helps. Good luck!

I think adding a marketing minor would be great if it's something that interests you! I currently work at a small Advertising agency as a designer, and since it's a smaller company, I also get to put my writing skills to good use. It really depends on whether or not that is something that interests you, but I think if you want to find a job where you can apply your love for design and writing, I would consider adding that minor.
I would also consider looking into minors other than marketing if you want to explore your love of writing. This could be anything from an English, communications, or other minors.

If you are more into writing content stuff then Graphic Designing with marketing will be a good choice.
If you like technology like softwares, mobile and web applications and how people interact with it and how to make better user experience then you can choose Human Computer Interaction aka HCI
Both have jobs all it matters what you enjoys the most.
Have a good day.

I have found that having an AAS in graphic design and then a BA in communications has helped tremendously in the job market. It has shown my versatility as a student and has served well into the professional world. You are able to look at a project or client profile at so many points of view. It allows you to fully understand the process from start to finish and not just one specific point of that project (whatever it may be). The more tools to understanding your passion the better.
I know from experience that interviewers have been impressed with my project knowledge when it comes to the work experience in accounting and finance to the project management to the production and marketing of that project.
I would say that having a graphics degree with a focus in marketing would merge your love of art and writing for a profession-oriented degree. Also look into internships that merge the two to be sure that your focus is solid.
