Is it easy to get jobs with big companies as a mechanical engineer

Well I am about to go into the 11th grade and I believe that I have my mind set on the career that I am going into but one thing that I may want to know is what are the best steps in becoming a successful mechanical engineer and what other jobs may be somewhat similar so that I could put in the my thoughts to widen my job spectrum? #mechanical engineer #mechanical-engineering

Some yes, some no. Everyone knows about the big companies so they are never short on applicants. But at the same time, they go on hiring sprees where they just can't get people in the door fast enough. Then they'll let people go just as quickly--you mean less to a large company than to a small one.

You have a much better chance of success with finding the small companies with a much smaller recruiting & marketing budget and seeking jobs with them. You'll be in a pool of much fewer applicants and more likely to land the job, plus they won't cut you loose as quickly.

Rule of thumb: the more hoops you jump through to apply to a job, the less chance of getting hired. If a company makes it real easy to submit a resume, you have a better chance of getting a call back.

Hi,
I work as a Talent Acquisition Manager for a big company and definitely Engineering is a field that we look for a lot.
Depending on your personal interests you can decide if it will be Mechanical or Industrial, but you have the basics.
There are a lot of fields you can work on such as Medical companies that are still hiring and making a difference saving lives. Or also if you like Aerospatiale or Automotive , what ever you decide you have a passion for.

Every company has different Recruitment processes, I wont say it is easy because you will need to have your bachelor degree, and if you are a recent graduate you can differentiate from other by your intership, or special projects that you have worked at school. Interviewers look for candidates that have interest in their field, have made innovations, are proactive and want always to learn more.

Ana recommends the following next steps:

What I will recommend is that you gain experience, even if it is just some hours that you can be in a company to see what an mechanical engineer is doing in "a day in the life".

I don't know if it is easier or not. There will be more opportunities, but also more people seeking out those opportunities. There are pros and cons of hiring on with a large company. You will likely find that large companies come to visit your college campus for recruiting. The largest companies tend to have well defined programs for hiring college graduates and training them as needed. Key benefits of a large company are better stability, more opportunities for training and formal career development, better support structures, an ability to move to different roles within the same company, better benefits, broader access to experts in your field and cross-functional areas etc. That said, a large company will have a distinct culture and certain ways of operating. You will be plugging into an entity much larger than yourself, so you will find the need to conform to certain aspects of the culture. You can think of company size like inertia--something that is small can move quickly, change directions easily, can more easily be influenced etc, while something that is large is more resistant to change. Therefore, if joining a large company, it is worth your time to make sure the culture and operating characteristics of a prospective employer aligns with your attitudes, goals, work expectations etc.
