I will soon need to take the G.R.E, a needed examination to enter a Master's Program, my question, How much do colleges take this to consideration? Does a high score really define your eligibility to enter great schools?

Hi Charles - it really varies not only from college to college - but also from program to program. Some universities take the GRE score very seriously and won't consider you if you don't meet a min score. Other colleges take a more holistic approach and care about the "big picture" including you undergrad GPA and specific degree program, your work experience, interview, writing sample, etc. It's fine to ask about the importance of the GRE score in terms of admission for the particular college and program your applying to. I think the GRE score is more important in the tech/science arena... and I think it also depends on how competitive the college and program is you're applying to; the more people who are trying to get in, the better your score probably needs to be. A recommendation from a graduate of the program you're applying to is also a great thing to have. I had a great interview and a recommendation from a program graduate (PhD program)... but my GRE score was just "so-so".... I got in. It's also a good idea to identify 3 colleges/programs you like...and apply to all 3. Just like most things, you need a back-up plan in case you don't get your first choice. :)

Like Debra said, it really varies not only from college to college - but also from program to program. Some science programs in competitive colleges are very hard to get in to even with great scores. But it is also good to look in to programs that are flexible and you can curate a degree with courses that suit what you want your career to be. Example: Computer Science programs are hard to get in to in, whereas General Engineering Program is easier to get in to ( Lower GRE score) and you can elect the same courses from Computer Science department or Business School or any department in the college.
To conclude if you think there is a university that you want to get in to take a look at all the programs that they are offering, most often you will find a program which has a lower GRE cutoff and elect the same courses.
