What is the most important skill from a high school graphics class that you used in college, and at your job?

I would like to someday be a graphic designer, and I would like to know a little more about the field before I decide if that's what I want to go earn a degree for. #graphic-designer #personal-development #art

Thank you comment icon Both Spartaco and Eric answers are right! The path is hard and can be frustrating sometimes. But if you are 200% focused and dedicated to be a designer then what I can add with my answer is BE CURIOUS! Never stop making questions to yourself, first of all, and to others. Have as open a culture and mind as possible: being a great designer is not only about design. David Carson is considered one of the greatest graphic designer of all time: he studied sociology. So, you must understand people; be empathetic with them. And remember that you're designing for them. Study, learn and "steal" from who you think your models are. And most of all don't be afraid to fail. Giuseppe Paletta

Eric’s Answer

Learning about your trade is super critical. Study good design, design principles, etc. Aside from studying design, it's very important to learn the software. Learn as much as you can. Adobe CC, with emphasis on Photoshop and illustrator. Learn the basics of 3D as well, Maya, Max, etc. Do not underestimate the importance of learning how to code. It may not seem relevant, but more and more, all disciplines will benefit from a solid understanding of programming. The more you know, the more problems you can solve.

Hi, for sure what the Eric said but really think about what you want to do. Also, do you want to be another designer in a overwhelming saturated career choice? You will need experience more than anything. Learn a ton of software and coding but it won't matter if you don't have some actual real life applying for what you've learned. I know, in the beginning it will be hard but you need to just get in the door somewhere. Personally, I would really think about it. Are you 200% or more, dedicated to being a designer? Do you have a natural talent and feel for it? I say that because even a person like me with a ton of experience and skills galore, still has a very difficult time finding full time work. I would concentrate on something specific and not so general as graphic design. An app developer or code in something specific or designing something very specialized. You've to stand out, be different and companies aren't going to take a chance on you, there's a million other versions of you when it comes to graphic design. You've to be you and try something, look into, research it. Don't jump on something cause it's popular or trending. Remember, with the internet, the personal touch is gone, so what do you do? WORK, study, work more, put yourself out there, don't just arm yourself with endless amounts of software, there's a ton of people out there. Most people who give you advice have a steady job and security, I don't. I have been around and worked, been fortunate in a lot of my gigs. The one thing nobody will tell you, luck and who you know are extremely important. Don't dismiss luck, being in the right place at the right time. But if you don't get out there, it won't find you. I hope this helps. Fight for what you want and don't just settle. Life is too short. Do something that matters to you. Ciao artist freelance illustration college graphic-design
