Elizabeth’s Answer

There are a few different types of lawyers: (1) transactional - they work on writing contracts and documents; (2) litigation / trial lawyers - they go to court and try cases; and (3) counselors / advisors - they are consulted and asked about the legality or issues with a proposed course of action. I was a practicing transactional lawyer working on business law matters, like forming corporations and selling stock. I chose to go to law school because I like to write, I like to read and research, and I like process. As a transactional lawyer, I drafted contracts, I researched rules and regulations to understand what my clients needed to do, and I advised my clients on ways to reduce their legal risks.

Elizabeth recommends the following next steps:

Talk to any lawyers that you or your family may know. If you don't know any, ask your teachers if they know any lawyers and see if you can have an informational interview where you ask the lawyer about their work, what they do and why they like it.

Jorie’s Answer

I think I sort of always knew! From a young age, I was always fascinated by books, shows, and movies about the law and the legal system. I also always really enjoyed research and writing. When I got to college, I went in undecided. I mean, liking shows and movies about the law didn’t necessarily mean I wanted to be a lawyer right?? My sophomore year of college, I took a class called Law, Lawyers, and the Legal System and I was SOLD. I declared my major shortly thereafter and started on the path to applying to law school. If it’s something you’re interested in, I suggest taking a class on the subject or joining a debate team or moot court team (especially if you think you might be interested in litigation). If you think you might be more interested in compliance or transactional work, there should also be some courses available that will give you a better idea of what work is involved in those types of legal careers. Happy to answer any other questions you may have!
