What's the most conventional way to get into the FBI, and what's the most unconventional?
I am studying to be a psychologist and I have a great interest in criminal profiling. I understand to be accepted into the BAU most agents have been working 7-10 years. I understand there are 5 different ways to be accepted into the FBI but I'm wondering if there is a simple or a different way to get in. #psychology #fbi #federal-agent

I have not worked for the FBI, however, it was my dream when I was your age. I started out taking classes at Western Illinois University (WIU) which is a GREAT Law Enforcement school in Illinois, or at least it was when i went there. I studied there for 2 yrs and then I joined the Army. The military is a great place to get learning and experience in one. However, if that is a route you consider taking, look at the types of job you want to do for the FBI and try hard to obtain that job in the service. maybe something in Military Intelligence (MI) or Military Police (MP). They have interrogation positions as well or can even look at cyber positions. The military isn't easy but it will prepare you for the line of work you are looking at and open doors to you for positions in the FBI. There was a position recently opened in USAJOBS.gov that was geared specifically towards hiring veterans. Any kind of experience you can get now on a volunteer basis or explorer basis or entry level job would help you later. The experience is what they look for. If you apply to the FBI and have no experience in the field, you run the risk of allowing someone else to slide in to the position. There are positions that would help you to qualify for that type of job that is not necessarily one you would think of. I worked with kids when I was your age at the Park District and at a place called the Berwyn Youth Commission (I believe it is no longer running, but was a place for kids to go after school to keep them away from gangs, drugs, alcohol, etc.). All I can say is think outside the box. look at the qualifications for the position you are looking at on the FBI.gov website. Then look for jobs that may give you a little experience in one or more of those fields. Be well rounded and keep your nose clean. Good luck to you
