It depends on each city, but in New York (for example), a rookie cop makes about $45,000 per year. There are also many other benefits to consider such as pension payments (which you may get when you retire) and vacation days. Here's a website where you can get more information about police salaries in NYC: http://www.nypdrecruit.com/benefits-salary/overview

First, let me commend you. A career in law enforcement "chooses you," which makes you very special indeed.

It truly does depend on what city you work in, as well as whether your job is as a State Trooper, city Police Officer, or a municipality or county. Across the U.S., the majority of LEOs (that's what we call Law Enforcement Officers) earn less than the average kindergarten teacher. No one gets rich in law enforecement, but it is rewarding, and a valuable, proud occupation.

Follow your heart, not your wallet. There you'll find all answers.
Best of luck to you!

In Chicago starting pay is about $53,000.00 per year. After 4 1/2 years it's around $70. Requirements are 21 years of age, live in Chicago, Drivers License, and two years or 60 hours of college and no felony convictions. The requirements vary slightly by department, so call the Personnel Department of the place you want to work to get a better idea. Keep your grades up and do not follow your friends because that only leads to trouble. Be your own person. Police are leaders, not followers. ,JRL mpa Chicago Canine patrolman retired.

It depends on what state you live in. But I will say this , if you are looking into law enforcement , don't expect to get rich . This is the type of career that will make you the most hatted as well as the most loved . If you have a passion for this line of work then you will succeed , but if it's just money then you will burn out quick. Consider some of your local police departments junior police explore programs reach allows youth to see what law enforcement is all about . Good luck to you and your choice in the field !!
