First and foremost, get your priorities straight. As a former professional player and NBA draft pick, my order was God, family, school, basketball. The first three can be a tremendous source of motivation, strength, character, support, intelligence, and perseverance - all of which you will need to achieve a highly competitive goal. Eliminate anything from your life that detracts from your priorities. Learn to turn negativity towards your goal into fuel for motivation. From a purely basketball perspective, plan your work and work your plan. No wasted reps whether it is working on a skill or running a sprint. If it's not worth doing right, it's not worth doing at all! Finally, the most important skill is learning to shoot the basketball the right way. Dribbling, passing, rebounding, and defending are all very important but nothing is more important than shooting. Unfortunately, you will run into many regurgitators of bad information. That's one of the reasons why school is so important. It should teach you how to be a critical thinker so you can decide for yourself if you are getting the right information. Don't be afraid to ask WHY.
