what is the pros and cons to be a dentist? Is it worth it?

I have been thinking about my career lately. I got very polarized opinions from people in this profession. Some said that it's the worst, people don't respect you even if you help them to maintain oral health. Some said that they were happy to be in this profession.
I hope to get some more detailed comments about this career. Is it worth it to go into this profession with many years of study?

Cassy’s Answer

Hi Joy, my name is Cassy. I'd love to give some of my thoughts about working in a dental office. I've been working in this field for 3 years, even though I'm not the dentist, I've been watching how they work every day. First, We are a general dental office, so most of our daily procedures are doing the cleaning, fixing the cavity, doing crowns and bridges, teeth weighting, and simple extraction and root canal. The daily schedule could be heavy or light which really depends on how many of your patients you can get, and the way how your office usually makes the schedule. Secondly, according to what you said about happy or unhappy about this career. I have to say that it really depends on your interests. If you are interested in working in a healthcare environment, following the schedule, and treating patients, you'll find the fun parts and meanings of this job. And finally, as for your concerns about some patients would not respect your hard work. What I want to say is, whether you own a dental office or work for others' professional team. I would tend to describe this job is kind of like customer service. There is a chance you will meet somebody unreasonable, but most of the patients I saw are very nice. Most patients are following the same dentist for a long period, so the relationship between dentist and patient could be friends, like you and your medical doctor. Hope this information can help you a little, don't hesitate to ask me if you have any other questions.
Thank you comment icon Thank you very much for providing such an insightful comment. It seems like you enjoy your current job right now at the dental office. I am glad to hear that. I have not shadowed yet; that's probably why I asked this question based on other people's comments. I think after I shadow, I would have a better idea. additionally, I think I like the patient and dentists' interaction. I love to work around people when I work. thank you! Joy

You are asking a question that only you can answer. Everyone has their own opinions on good things and bad. What I would recommend is contacting several dentists and seeing if they would give you some time for an interview. You can then ask them specific questions based on what your expectations of the position are. Having multiple opinions will allow you to base your decision on whether or not you would enjoy pursuing that career.

Good luck.
Thank you comment icon Yes, I would definitely do that. Thank you! Joy

Sabina’s Answer

Dentistry is a wonderful profession. Most patients are grateful and appreciate the services provided. Few are difficult, but that exists in every job! Remember- dentistry has many specialties depending on what you like - surgery, implants, root canals, general dentistry. You can specialize after dental school and as a specialist you can make significantly more, work less and only do the type of dentistry you enjoy.
Thank you comment icon thank you for the comment! Inspired me to continue to pursue dentistry! Joy
