About $0.5M / year. It is actually not as high as people think. Most surgon after long medical school and $.5M or more in debt starts making real money close to 40. The work is brutally physically, emotionally and mentally challenging. Surgon has a average life expectancy of 57 in US. So it is a short earning period. On average, a surgon does not get to enjoy the SSN he/she paid into.

Hi Jessica,
How much surgeons get paid (as with any other field) will depend on the type of specialty, location, supply and demand of talent in your area, etc. There are several online sources where you can access general pay data for different fields of work. Based on a quick Salary.com search (link below) a Surgeon in NY is listed at a median of ~477k. Of course, that will vary based on experience level and some of the other factors I listed. There are many other fields that pay in the same ballpark like Finance or Engineering/Data Science, etc. In the corporate world, once you reach executive level/C-suite level you will also see comparable pay. Hope this helps!
