What are some programs I can join to learn about the medical field?

I am a junior in high school. I would like to be a pediatrician but would like a program that will teach me important information about college and the medical field. #high-school #program #pediatrician #medicalfield

Hi Daniela,

Talk with your parents to contact your school in order for them to organize information sessions (even if via Zoom or Blackbaud) for different career sectors. Perhaps these presentations (by professionals working in medicine, etc) could be part of university/hospital community relations and recruitment marketing as well as your school's career development initiatives.

If your parents have known a few doctors during the last few years or decades, some of the latter might be willing to answer a few questions for students (especially if their private practice has shifted to increased telemedicine protocols). Tell your parents to contact those doctors for suggested date/time and format; find out if your school could orchestrate a couple of group sessions for juniors and seniors in your high school.

Stay well,
Natasha

Hi Daniela,

That is great you are interested in pediatrics, it is a great field! I am currently a student doctor planning to specialize in pediatrics.

Some things that may be helpful include exposing yourself to working with kids in ANY environment. Examples--tutoring, coaching sports, volunteering at kids marathons, working in childcare, working in research with kids, being a teacher's aid, helping kids with disabilities. The goal here would be to expose yourself to different age groups of kids and learn how to connect with them naturally. Plus a few of these activities done long term look great on college applications to show your dedication to your interest! With COVID, many of these activities have moved virtual!

In addition, once COVID dies down (maybe in your college years), trying to find a pediatrician to shadow can be very valuable. Most colleges have a "pre-med" club that gives you info on how to apply to med school. For the time being applying to colleges, try to expand your net to science heavy schools as those are the ones that will have most resources to connect you with medical schools!

Hope this helps
