Like many professions it has its good and bad days. I can’t really say which there are more of, but what I do know is that an impact is being made. I have learned more from the young people than I feel they learn from me. If you go into this field expect to leave a little of yourself with every client you see. One of the best questions I was asked in my first interview was if I could do the job without ever seeing an outcome. It helps realize that you have to do it because you love it and believe in it. It may take years for what you were working toward to materialize.

Being a social worker can be very rewarding but very challenging. You learn that some people are manipulative, greedy, lazy, and don't truly want help in becoming self-sufficient; they only want to be maintained and don't intend to ever provide for themselves or their families. Thus, you do what is right. Offer help, assist in reframing priorities when possible but be realistic and hold clientele accountable. Always focus on victims such as children and the elderly. I work in this profession because sometimes people's lives improve due to my interventions. Do it with your heart in the right place and you will be proud of your profession.
