Gemma’s Answer

Dear Jessica,

Some of the duties of a social worker include helping clients in their everyday lives. They mainly help clients who are dealing with issues including neglect, any abuse, domestic violence, mental health abuse.

If you are interested in social work as a career, I would suggest doing research on the career and reaching out or networking with someone in the Social Work field and do an informational interview with them on the career, where they work, what education background they have such as what their major or degrees are in, etc.

I hope this helps!

Jasmine’s Answer

Jessica, the duties of a social worker varies based on the type of social work you choose to do. In Social Work you can choose to work with children and provide services in CPS, Adoption and Foster Care. There are services available to Adults that are disabled, elderly or have mental/substance abuse needs. I work on another side of Social Services that provides benefit programs to families such as SNAP (food assistance), Medical Assistance, TANF (cash assistance) and other programs that help with energy bills, tax relief, etc. Some Social Workers work in the medical field as well providing services to those who are sick and also comfort to families facing challenges. Social Work is a very rewarding career as you are assisting individuals and families from diverse populations but no matter what area of Social Services you choose to work in you must have good case management skills, customer service, and be able to work independently with minimum supervision.
