Hi Jessica:
Speaking from personal experience:
- supervisory/management positions pay higher then direct service. Usually supervisory/management positions require Master's degrees.
- Location is important and I'm based in the Bay Area (San Francisco), California - one of the most expensive places to live in the US.
- I've always worked with low-income youth and families in the areas of education, affordable housing and services/programs development.
- I've worked in non-profit organizations, public schools, and local government. I've earned the highest pay in local government working as a manager/supervisor.
Hope this helps,
angela

Social work is a broad field and many factors impact pay. A person with a masters degree usually makes more than someone with a bachelors degree. Having a license or other government approval to practice social work increases the salary. Someone who is legally allowed to diagnose and treat patients in their own business with evidence-based approaches make anywhere from $195- 225 US per hour. The location also influences salary. Places like New York City pay more. In general someone with a bachelors degree and does case work will earn $25-35k US and someone with a masters will be around $40-$55k US starting out. Besides private practice, hospital social work pays relatively well. Social workers work in many different areas and pay will be different. In general though, social work is not a highly paid profession. Many take on second jobs to increase their income. I hope this helps answer your question.

It depends on what type of SW you want to work in, do you want to be an administrator, what state you work in. Are you doing macro or micro sw.
Quickest way to find out is to go to the NASW or your state Bureau of Industry and look for their wage benefits information.
Use website on NASW
Contact Dept of Labor in your state
Contact local NASW chapter.
