Wael’s Answer

I highly discourage you to flow this career. Falling oil prices caused sever layoff in that field. It is projected for oil prices to rise but never to reach $1XX like they used to be not so long ago. Moreover, our planet is begging us to shift to cleaner energies. 2015 was a record braking year in terms of temperatures and it is projected for 2016 destroy 2015! 2016 registered the highest temperature rise ever recorded by man.

Baris’s Answer

Please avoid it. I studied petroleum engineering but always worked at High Performance computing engineer at Shell and Schlumberger. I have transitioned from Petroleum Engineering and Industry to other industries for the exact reason Wael mentioned above. Climate crisis is going to make this profession even more useless in near future. Focus towards social studies, art, ecological studies, computer programming, mechanical/chemical engineering, biotechnology, AI, robotics, etc.. You need to find a field that will withstand not only climate change but also automation due to AI. Almost all fields will be disrupted by them.
