How close is Brooklyn-99 to the real NYPD?

Ok, dumb question, but is Brooklyn-99 anything similar to actually being on the NYPD? I love the show and it's made me consider joining the NYPD but I know it's fiction and probably unrealistic. One of the best parts about the show is its representation and diversity, but is the NYPD force actually anything like that, or is it like police stereotypes and mostly white guys? I know the events and humor are exaggerated on TV, but does the workplace typically have toxic masculinity and racism like some police forces are known to have?

Hi Amanda. I'm sure that the show slightly reflects some of what the NYPD may be like but the real NYPD is probably very different and a lot more serious of course.

Good luck.

DENNIS’s Answer

Hi Amanda: I am not a big fan of the show. My wife likes it - but she likes me so there is no accounting for taste!? The parts I have seen make the cops look like clowns. They are not like that in real life. Police work is serious, dangerous work. It is diverse. NYPD has a very diverse body of officers. I am short. When I was young they had height requirements. I am pretty sure they dropped those. Other than that you need to be in good shape. The force is now very diverse.
I note you are from New York City. Why not go to 1 Police Plaza (1PP) and get information from them directly.? 1PP is down by City Hall. If you walk down Centre Street just passed the Federal Court there is a plaza with food vendors and a few tables. (at least there were before Covid) Walk back in there. That big brick building is 1PP. Go in and ask questions. I am sure they would love to help. Plus there was a NYPD Museum that was on lower Broadway but moved. Had some cool exhibits. Look that up. Worth the visit.
I know a lot of ex-cops. Most are really good people. However, the job can be tough on you. You see a lot of bad stuff and it takes a toll. So go to 1PP and explore for yourself. I am sure they will be happy to see you!
