It depends on your interests, so the answer is different for everyone! If you love working with kids, pediatrics would great! For me, I think anesthesiology is the coolest specialty! It's very hands-on, but also requires problem-solving and understanding physiology, pharmacology, and anatomy. It's also so diverse and every day can be so different!

Radiology is an exciting and dynamic field. For me personally, the procedures are the most exciting. For example, we recently introduced Y-90 radioembolization at our hospital. This provides a new opportunity to treat liver cancers and prolong lives.

Hi Daniela! I definitely agree that it depends on your interest. Many individuals can be interested in different areas of specialities; it could also come from experience such as shadowing a physician who concentrated on a particular area of medicine or a family experience that made you want to pursue a specific specialty. In medical school you will be doing rotations and they will give you a better look on the details of each specialty. My sister shadowed an OB/GYN and she also loves to stay active and wake up early and be on the move every point in her life, so she definitely is interested in this specialty and surgery as well. My brother enjoyed psychology both as an undergrad and in medical school along with neurology as well, and he is now a Psychiatry resident. Personally for me, I love to work with children and I also saw firsthand how a child's life can change with the onset of illness, therefore I hope to pursue the specialty of being a pediatrician! It really is about what makes you happy and where you can see yourself, but you still have time to decide so for now keep studying and get experience if you can in the medical field!
Best of luck!

I prefer the surgical and procedural specialties because they are interesting and have mental and physical requirements. I really like working on my feet. Surgeons tend to very goal oriented and like immediate results. Primary care physicians tend to be more interested in the long term care of patients, and they take care of chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure and diabetes. They are more involved in patients' emotional health and family as well. It just depends on what appeals to you. I have been a gynecologic surgeon for 30 years. Every case is interesting to me. I see women of all ages and get to provide preventive medicine as well as take care of acute problems. I like that many of my patients have been in my practice for years and years.
