Hi Daniela! I agree with the previous answers! You could also ask them about obstacles they faced; for example did they have to take the MCAT more than once? Did they fail a course? Did they do gap years or struggle in medical or nursing school? You could also ask them what would they have done differently? Sometimes when a person experiences certain events they have a better grasp on how to handle them more efficiently in the future and that knowledge can be passed on to someone else who can also experience a similar event. This will definitely help in you in deciding for the medical field and also it will be a reminder that even the best healthcare professionals may have had some obstacles or difficulties in their lives as well! They are also human beings who just have worked hard to get to where they need to be!

Best of luck!

Hi Daniela,
You have been given some great advice already. My only additional thought for you to consider is to ask several different medical professionals why they chose their career and what motivates them to stay with it. It can be a very rewarding and challenging career choice. There are patterns to key aspects of success that you may discover as you talk with them. Best of luck.

Dan’s Answer

You already know the pros, and those are easy to ask but don't forget about the negative aspects of medicine as well. Before you make the decision to go into medicine you should have the whole picture.

Holly’s Answer

Ask them if they regret their career choice- depending on what type of medical professional they are, they may have higher stress levels than others. A heart specialist may have higher stress levels than an RN. Also, see how much education each person has. Everybody that has an LPN and above has to have a certain amount of classes to stay current on their license but if you just want to practice general medicine, its not as intensive as a specialty. Also talk to those who are general, pediatric, and geriatric specialties so you can decide which one appeals most to you.
