Yes! It is absolutely worth it. There are a lot of long hours studying in the library followed by long hours in the hospital, but it is a fulfilling career. There are so many opportunities after medical school... different specialties appeal to different individuals. Or you can follow a nonclinical route in research or even hospital administration.

When seeking ideas for a profession, job or vocation, I believe it is important to look at yourself first. Do you really enjoy and want the best for children? Do you spend time working with them now in some way? So you like learning and investigating mysteries and oddities? Remember you will spend a lot of time in school learning about various things. You will be spending a lot of time with children, but also parents. If you are a people person, then a field such as pediatrics could service you and your clients well. As you consider and hold this desire to be a pediatrician, I would suggest to find ways, jobs or tasks that have you interact with young children. The earlier suggestion of shadowing medical professionals who work with children is a great way to observe and learn. Most importantly, keep you mind and heart open to the various ways you many serve in medicine and with children. Now would be a good time to do some reading on children, medicine and general how to interact with people. Everyone can always use information to build.

I think the short answer is YESSSSSS!!!! but then the long answer is yes, but it depends.
Medicine will be the most rewarding job, but only for a select set of people. I am about to graduate medical school and
just finished the hardest testing season I have ever lived through. The weight of caring for other humans weighs on people and I have seen my classmates struggle with making it through school. Now I watch residents struggle through their training and work with attendings who are stretched thin.
Medicine is rewarding to us because it is our passion. So if you are passionate about peds then yes it is a good career. But if you are not ready to give long hours and late nights then you may want to go for a different route.
Shadow a pediatrician
Read about all the specialties in peds
study really hard in under grad
keep up your resume with volunteering and leadership

Yes. Shadow a pediatrician to get to know the specialty. There is quite a bit of routine care/ preventive care such as well visits with vaccinations and then sick child visits. In larger communities, pediatric specialists will be available to help with more complicated cases like cystic fibrosis and diabetes. You will make such a difference in your patients' lives.
