How do I further develop my public speaking for forensic science careers

I know individuals will be called as expert witness for scientific based evidence. I am not a good public speaker; I tend to ramble or I freeze up. I need help with techniques that will help me remain focused and not be afraid of any audience. This will also help improve my interview skills. #biology #interviews #speech #expert-witness

Thank you comment icon Thank you for your comment. Improv is way out of my comfort zone at the moment. I am taking baby steps. I still get uncomfortable when presenting in front of a class. I would really like more information for raising my voice since I have a quiet voice. Also, I would like some books at your recommendation please. Onyinye

Gregg’s Answer

Public speaking is many times cited as people's greatest fear so what you are feeling is very common. Obviously preparing and knowing the material very well is important but so is remembering that if you are giving the presentation or the speech, you are the expert. You are the person who has the most knowledge about the topic. Your audience is learning from you and curious what you will have to say, whether it is a jury, a judge or a room of people. Finally, it is okay to admit what you do not know.

Good luck!

Alexander’s Answer

Everyone gets nervous when presenting, even people who have given many. Learn how to be comfortable being uncomfortable! Preparation and practice will go a long way in helping your presentation and easing your nerves. Practice with some friends that you trust, who will give you good, honest feedback. Toastmasters, improv, and other clubs have several locations around the country where you can gain practice and learn from others.

Alexander recommends the following next steps:

Sign up for a club (like toastmasters or improv) where you can practice speaking
