What are key characteristics to have when pursuing a medical career?

I am thinking about pursuing a medical career, but I am still unsure of what I might do. I wish to know what some of the characteristics you have observed about yourself or others when they have successfully pursued a medical career. I want to study the characteristics in order to be more aware of what it takes to pursue the medical field. #doctor #medicine #science #professor #nurse #biology

Rita’s Answer

One of my extended family member has pursued a career in medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years now; some of the key characteristics I see in that person and which I think has contributed to their success is being an outstanding student in that field; being patient, as this is one of the key characteristics needed in medicine; be a good listener; quick decision maker; be able to express self control under stressful environment and also be able to show empathy. Hope this helps.

Ryan’s Answer

Hi Emily. An intense desire to be a physician or surgeon is critical for medical school. The focus on the end goal is important to keep the time and the short term difficulties in perspective. Regardless of the field, a medical career is going to be rewarding and demanding. You will learn skills along the way and meet some great people who have done it before.
