What is one thing you wish someone told you before becoming a business major?

I am currently a junior in high school and I am VERY interested in the business and economics world within society. I do realize that majoring in business covers a broad spectrum of career opportunities, but what is one thing that someone wanting to study business should be advised on? What do you wish YOU knew about business when considering it for your career path? #finance #management #accounting #marketing #entrepreneurship #economics #international-trade #international-sales

Business is such a broad category ... I would advise you to major in a specific field - finance, accounting, marketing, etc. - and supplement that with more general courses in business.

Before picking any major have a good idea of the list of companies that you are interested in working for.

Hi Kaylyn! Great question. The best advice I can give that I wish had been pushed more on me is to either do an internship, or study abroad (or both!). I did work at a local business office while attending college which did give me some experience, but I did not have a true internship. Going into a business major there are many different paths you can take, so the more variety of experience you can gain early on, the better. Be open to learning as much as you can, it will benefit you in gaining experience as well as help you decide on the best path for you to take going forward in your career.

As a technology specialist, one would think that I have a background in CS, or engineering. To the contrary, I have a business degree. I feel that a business degree gives you a broad background in Marketing, finance, economics, and accounting.

I feel it is a very valid way of experiencing different business disciplines to determine which may interest you. With 20+ years engaged in technology currently focused on Sales Engineering, I find a frequently fall back on basic concepts I learned in college.

The best advice I could give is College Is not only about learning specific skills, but learning HOW to learn, which is a life skill.

Get as much real world experience you can. Definitely leverage internships because when you graduate and look for a full time job, they will expect you to not only have your degree but also plenty of experience in the field you wish to pursue.

I wish I had done two things very early - no need to wait for college even:

1) intern for someone running a business who is widely considered very smart (tough is ok) and work your tail off for that person. insist the job/internship be "real" and if it's not hard and meaningful after 30 days, agree up front that you will leave.

2) really try and start your own side business that takes real $ from people and take it seriously for at least 1 full year - do not give up on it and do not abandon it. as for you college business major... THAT can likely be abandoned :)
