Hi Madison,

It's great to hear that you're looking for ways to work towards your goals. I think the first step is exploring career options and trying to determine what career might be right for you.
I find it helps to think about things like:
- What makes you excited?
- What do you like to do in your spare time?
- What skills do you have?
- Are there any classes in school that stick out as your favorite?

Once you have a better idea of what your career goals may be, you can make a more specific path to reach them. At this point, you can research how to reach those goals (on CareerVillage.org!). I agree, though, that working hard and sharing thoughts is an important piece of any career, and if you continue doing that you will be in a great place!

It's great you have identified a career you want to pursue! Your experience in working hard and sharing your thoughts will be helpful in your journey.

To me, it is key to get experience in your career area of interest, such as volunteer opportunities, even virtual volunteer opportunities to get a deeper understanding of day to day work and strengths needed to thrive in that career. One of my lessons learned in this area was when I was a physics major and wanted to become a theoretical physicist and so I worked hard, got great grades and pursued and received a summer internship at a wonderful research institution. There I learned that the day to day life and strengths needed to thrive in a technical position did not match my needs. I was more interested in the day to day work of running the institution, and thus my career journey started to evolve. (now I work in high tech business!)

I would also encourage you to reach out and connect with as many people as possible about your career interest and ask if they know anyone who could share their experiences with you. You could even post your career interest on this site to hear about day to day life and strengths needed to pursue your career interest.

Enjoy your career journey!

Dina’s Answer

Hi Madison - Something I have found incredibly helpful in my career is networking. A great place to start, especially once you have found your desired career, would be to seek out a mentor. Many professionals are eager to share their experiences, from successes to failures - each one has learning opportunities.

If there are companies you admire, do a bit of research to find out if they offer mentoring and possibly down the road, even internships. Establishing relationships early on can help bring visibility to your skills and get your foot in the door. In addition, the more you interact within the industry, the better able you will be to set goals and enhance understanding of what it takes to be a success in your chosen field.

Don't be afraid to put yourself out there … ask questions and be confident in your abilities. We all had to start somewhere and it sounds like you have already taken a big "first step". Working in a team environment will be invaluable to your future career aspirations. Wishing you every success!
