Think of game design as a combination of things.
- Visual design / graphic design / art
- Experience design
- Motion graphics
- Story telling
- Cognitive Science ("cog-sci") or psychology
- Code and development
So, you can look into any of those areas and see which ones you're most drawn to. If you're doodling in class all the time and you're really into art, you might be more drawn to (no pun intended) the artistic, graphic-design side of things. The classes you'd take there are graphic-design studio classes, color theory, and stuff like that.
If you're intro the different interactions and experience design, you might take classes that have "UI Design," or "UX Design" in their names.
As you get better, you'll go from 2D design (sketching, drawing... Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch...) to 3D (I don't actually know the best programs for this).
There's also motion graphics. Typically, you get good at static graphic design before motion design.
There's virtual reality. That's also more advanced. The main program that people are talking about for designing and building in VR is Unity.
Here's a recent video talking about what it's like designing games: https://youtu.be/qt0ZQW8lDy8
Don't let that intimidate you; it's definitely not for the entry-level position right out the gates. Focus on fundamental courses in those areas above and grow from there based on what interests you the most.
Hope that helps.

There are universities that offer game designing as a major! I think you should check them out.
