How do I get to the career of my dreams?

I have no idea what it takes to get a degree in ASL and where to go from there. I am not even sure about colleges. I am kind of in a rut as my senior year is about to begin I see what my dream is but I can't quiet navigate the route. #career-paths #help #college-advice #asl #teen

Kendall... just found your initial inquiry from 2016 spring and since by now I believe you have completed your senior year and have graduated from high school and have found a university / college to start your higher educational learning in pursuit of a career centered on ASL? If you are still not quite certain on which path to pursue you may want to saver how for a major in "Deaf Studies" with concentrations offerings like ASL/English Interpreting if you want to go the professional route as as interpreter; or working within the deaf community and being an advocate with concentrations in Deaf Cultural Studies or Deaf Community Services ; and there is the ever growing field in education- Pre- Deaf education and the Arts- ASL/ASL literature.

Roberta’s Answer

Assuming you do mean American Sign Language, there are a few career paths open with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in this field. There are two that come to mind Sign Language Interpretation and Speech-Language Pathology.

Sign Language Interpretation is something that is very diverse and let' you work in a lot of different places. They work at concerts, political events, and oh so many more. I recommend exploring Bigfuture.collegeboard.org for ideas on how to get started and speaking to your guidance counselor who may have opportunities for you to meet someone in your local community that can give you a chance to get your feet wet in the field.
