What Is more important in today's society? Computer scientists or computer engineers?

Recently, I decided that I would want to get a double major in Computer Science and Computer Engineering. However, I am not sure which career I would like to pursue, because I love each equally. What is more important? Hardware or software? #computer-science #engineering #computer #technology #computer-engineering #scientist

Javier,

Here's some thoughts that will help you answer your own question.

Make a list of truly significant hardware developments (platforms, breakthroughs, or whatever) that have really made a difference in the areas you consider to be important.

Make a list of truly significant software applications (techniques, algorithms, or whatever) that have really made a difference in the areas you consider to be important.

In each case, what made the difference? Was it really the _ware that made the difference or was it the _ware? Perhaps it was both working together.

Areas that you consider important may include positive impact on people's lives, cost reductions, ability to achieve things that could not be achieved before and many other things.

What areas do you naturally think in terms of?

Enjoy the process of thinking about this.

Daniel’s Answer

Comp sci right now has more job opportunities. Neither is really more "important"... each is very useless without the other.

(I have both of these degrees)

Also, some advice I wish I'd heard before my 9th semester: consider only one degree, finish faster, and get a master's in the same time frame.

Tony’s Answer

Hi Javier, both are important and necessary fields. I advise to go with the one you are more interested in. Software is more abstract, hardware is more mechanical.
