I would recommend that you explore the field of Environmental Engineering. Engineering is a difficult program, in college, but would probably be the most lucrative path to go.

Good Luck!

Vernon’s Answer

Your parents are missing the boat. In other parts of the world, the environmental ship has been sailing the seas of innovation and implementation for decades. It is only in the U.S. where backward thinking and profit-driven denials have stymied renewable energy technology across the board.

When/if you are in college, take as much physical science and math as you can. Also, learn at least one other language besides English. Look for summer internships and make connections with those who ARE in the renewable energy sector. Electron storage for vehicles and buildings will be a huge (sorry) necessity in the coming decades.

Study like your career depended on it, because it does. Learn to write and speak with very high skill levels. Make yourself into the complete package and you will have a very satisfying career. Be sure to invite your parents to your first technical presentation.

Sincerely,

Vern Turner

Your parents have a point! The medical field jobs are the highest paid jobs in the states. They would offer you a lifestyle no other job is capable of. Having said that, you have a point too. I am an engineer and I can't imagine myself doing anything else. I think you should love what you do for a living. Try to discuss the topic again with your parents after you check the links below.
