How do I know what degree to peruse in order to follow my planed career path?

I want to go into advertising, but more specifically write and direct television ads and music videos. I would presume I would meed some sort of marketing degree, but do I major or minor in that? Also what do I do as far as the artistic side of it? #college #career #marketing #arts

Grace,
I would suggest both marketing and film schools or a school that has both. TV ads are thought up by the marketers and then the idea is passed on to scriptwriters. The director comes in later and adds his 'eye' to the script. The more you know about marketing the easier it is to translate that into script form. As a director of TV ads the more you know about both marketing and scriptwriting the easier it is for you to incorporate the marketing point into a comprehensive and engaging product.


Music videos use the same circle as TV ads. You are selling a product (the band/artist) via a product (the video) to sell their product (the song). So if you are not yet confused, at the least it would be helpful to minor in marketing and major in film, directing and scriptwriting.


I started as a singer/songwriter who worked A&R in Nashville. Film and video came later. I hope this helps.

You have the right focus. Marketing is he major for you. As for a minor, you do not have to have one minor, unless you decide so.
If you like creating ads and similar, visual arts like video and photography may be a good choice

I would focus the degree on Marketing and Media. S.U. has a great program in the Newhouse School located in Syracuse, NY for example. Intern at a local Television Station, while you're in school. The marketing should be a Minor and then Media, Film, & Directorship should serve an excellent major in a qualified college.
