Nir’s Answer

Music production can be really great but it's also a very tough business to succeed because positions at major studios are very limited and building your own is expensive and presents its own great sets of challenges. Before you decide what interests you most about the industry I really recommend you spend some time exploring different options.

See if you can get some shadowing experience around different professionals. Spend a day with your band conductor. Spend a day with a local musician. Reach out to a local studio and ask if you can shadow.

Right now all the doors are open and it's really important you get a good sense of which you like most before you dive in.

Nelson’s Answer

Being a sophomore in high school is a great age to expand your musical horizons. Don't let the media at large determine what your true likes and loves are in the music world. Often times we think just because something is popular right now that sets the direction you must go, however the future in music will be different than what's happening right now. There are musicians and bands playing shows and making recordings which will become popular in the future that may not sound anything like what the media is pumping right now. It is a great idea to learn as much as you can about all music. For me when I began to decide I was going into music I had listened to some extremely creative materials including the current rock groups from England and also some classical music which is simply magical. In your quest of music, you must search for some of these factors, the reasons that you decide to pursue the deep knowledge in music will be apparent. Even if you find some kind of music that no one else understands don't let that stop you. Because in the future the regular listeners of the world will catch up eventually. So be daring, be experimental seek unusual and brilliant music. Learn the basics of music theory, of recording and mixing, mastering music this will lead you to arranging if its for others or for your own musical works solo or even if you're in a band, the person with the knowledge will be the go to person. Take it a step at a time and best of luck to you.
