Savannah,
It is great that your teacher asked you to pick 3 jobs so you can get exposure to each one in the next few years and see how you like each one. I decided to become a lawyer for 2 reasons - to help people and I really enjoyed a business law class I had in high school. When you get into high school you should look into volunteering or interning with a law firm/attorney/public defender and take some elective classes to see what you enjoy. A law degree provides you with many options not only in the legal field ( criminal, business, litigation, etc...) but also non legal jobs (human resources, contract administrator, insurance, etc..) . With all 3 of the jobs you choose, make sure to take classes, and explore job shadowing options to see what you enjoy.

Good luck to you!

Glenn’s Answer

Savannah,
I knew I wanted to be a lawyer because I found out in High School that I had a talent for debate and for logical thinking. To those talents, I found out I needed to add the skills of reading for comprehension, speaking and writing clearly and concisely, and attention to detail. Those talents and skills are the basic building blocks for a successful legal career. If you have them, or can develop them, a career as a lawyer might be a good fit for you.
Warmest regards,
Glenn

Focus on your strengths and talents, then do the research! From school and feedback, I knew I was good at writing and public speaking. I also knew I cared about people and liked standing up for others who couldn’t stand up for themselves. Plus, I’ve always had an intuition about what’s right and what’s fair - all good traits for a lawyer. Then I did some research on types of law and made a list of what areas I thought I would like to go into. I researched the LSAT test, the three years required for law school and the Bar Exam required to practice, with study methods and expectations for each. Finally, I asked a law student if I could attend class with her - I sat in on a Constitutional Law class and was hooked! You could ask a law student to allow you to log into a zoom class, find an attorney who will let you shadow them for a day or listen in on a zoom hearing, etc. so you can see what it would be like and if you’re actually interested.
