I have a good friend who is a litigation lawyer specializing in families and divorce. He spends tons of good quality time with his family: putting on neighborhood BBQs, attending his kids' sporting events, and going to church every Sunday and volunteering his time there.
The work-life balance is definitely possible.

I'm not a lawyer but I'd assume that how much free time you have will depend on your career goals.
If you want to become a partner at a large firm then you'll likely need to put in a huge number of billable hours. If you open your own practice, then initially you'll likely spend lots of time finding clients and then have to get their cases handled.
If you really want work life balance, then the right corporate legal job may offer more defined hours. However, even in this environment the people that put in the hours and get results will get promoted.
